Skip Ahead Xbox Insiders will soon receive builds planned for 2019

2019 is coming to 2018.

A few months ago, Microsoft announced the Xbox Insider "Alpha – Skip Ahead" ring. The Skip Ahead ring allows Xbox Insiders to test out builds with features that won't be available to all Xbox One owners for many months. However, that timeline seems to be shifting. Skip Ahead Insiders will soon start receiving builds meant for 2019.

Left 4 Dead-like 'Earthfall' getting Horde Mode later this year

Earthfall is about to get even better.

Earthfall follows survivors who fend off an alien invasion of the American Pacific Northwest using squad tactics, portable heavy weaponry, instant walls, and more tools as they try to avoid swarms of horrific intergalactic invaders.

The game plays a lot like like cult classic Left 4 Dead. Today, the developer shared a roadmap which detailed future content. While a lot of the patches will involve weapons and missions, in October a "Horde Mode" is coming. This means that you'll have to fight waves of increasingly-difficult aliens with your friends.

In Earthfall, you have to work together with your teammates to succeed because there are countless alien creatures that must be eliminated. It seems like trying to "Rambo" it will only end in disaster.

You can either buy the $39.99 Earthfall: Deluxe Edition on Amazon, or purchase the digital-only standard edition for $29.99 on the Microsoft Store.

Best Laptop for VR in 2018

Best overall

Alienware 17

A powerful gaming laptop with plenty of ports.

See at Dell

While the higher-end specs might be overkill for most people, you can land a mid-range Alienware 17 with enough power to run VR for about $1,799. This laptop has an 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8750H processor (CPU), 16GB of DDR4 RAM, a NVIDIA GTX 1070 OC graphics card (GPU) with 8GB of GDDR5 VRAM, and enough ports for Rift, Vive, or Windows Mixed Reality (WMR). The 17.3-inch display is big and beautiful, available in 1080p, 1440p, or 4K.

Bottom line: For the best VR-ready for most people, go with the Alienware 17.

4 things we're hoping to see in Windows 10's next major update '19H1'

"19H1" is Microsoft's next major update for Windows 10. Here are some of the things we're hoping to see make an appearance.

Windows 10 19H1 development is now a-go internally at Microsoft, which means it's time to start thinking around about what we want to see in Microsoft's next update for Windows 10, scheduled for release in the spring of next year.

Microsoft already stated that it plans to release two feature updates to Windows 10 each year, one in March or April and the other in September or October. We're expecting 19H1 to be finalized in the March or April 2019 time-frame.

Here are some new features we're hoping to see.

Windows 'Sets'

Microsoft hasn't publicly committed to a specific Windows 10 release for Windows Sets, as the company only wants to ship the feature when it's good and ready. Insiders were able to test an early version of Sets during the development of Redstone 4 and Redstone 5, and the same should happen throughout the development of 19H1. So, here's hoping it will be ready in time for the RTM of 19H1 next year.

Sets allows users to group apps and websites under the same window, just like how tabs work in a web browser. It extends that same tabbing experience to more than just websites, allowing apps like Word, PowerPoint or Slack to be grouped together under one Set that can then be shared across devices with Timeline. It's a productivity enabler and is a significant change to how we use our PCs.

Why the BlackBerry KEY2 is my favorite phone since the Lumia 1520

Since the untimely death of Windows on phones, I haven't really found a phone that "can do it all" while retaining the aspects of Windows Phone I found hard to give up. The KEY2 comes the closest.

The Lumia 1520 is my all-time favorite phone. With the polish of Windows Phone 8.1, the stunning camera sensor, insane battery life, that huge, gorgeous display, that eye-popping polycarbonate body, ooh baby. No phone has really come close to delivering that sort of experience for me since. But man, the new Android-based BlackBerry KEY2 comes damn close.
