Ray tracing is a rendering technique that creates a 3D image by calculating how virtual light rays hit various surfaces. This technique is seen as a replacement for the traditional method of lighting objects in games to make everything appear more realistic, but it does require a significant amount of power.
Before, developers used polygons and rasterization to create 3D imagery in games, creating virtual environments without having to deal with physics and light. Instead, the GPU will simulate and trace how light rays bounce around a scene, which results in better imagery. That's the theory, anyway
